The underlying mechanism is fascinating: neurons fire and shut down one at a time, building up over hours or days until eventually the entire circuit shuts off. It's hard to explain what that means because it feels like something else happened but isn't. The body switches from being active—thinking deeply about future goals—to simply resting—an activity almost everyone does unconsciously every day without really knowing how.

The brain is doing all those calculations behind us anyway while we're sleeping, so the question becomes: why do people sleep at all? Why can someone fall asleep in a single night? Or why do some adults spend years trying to stay awake during their first serious attempt at wakefulness?

There are three main reasons for this phenomenon. The oldest one—the cause—that is perhaps most obvious but also feels least like biology. This was explored back in the late 1970s when researchers noticed something strange about people who were very tired and couldn't stay asleep after just sitting still overnight without anything happening around them.

They found that those individuals wouldn't fall asleep under any other conditions; they would simply not fall asleep at all even if nothing else was wrong with their bodies. They seem to have an internal clock built into themselves, hardwired deep down inside. It doesn't matter whether you're sitting in a comfortable room or trying to stay awake through the night—it still can't resist falling back.

This explains why someone might keep waking up during the early hours of the morning; they just don't know yet what it means. It also accounts for why older adults spend ages getting ready to sit up and then eventually losing that habit over months or years. The reason is that the natural rhythm wears thinner, more slowly every time you move from nighttime to light activities like watching TV.

Another explanation comes from the modern understanding of memory itself—specifically how long it takes to retrieve information after forgetting it. This idea was first introduced in 1974 and has been refined ever since. It suggests that memories aren't stored neatly locked away somewhere forever; they're spread out across days, weeks, months, even years depending on the intensity of recall required.

The older answer—the one most people accept—isn't as obvious as it sounds. The reason people fall asleep is partly because their bodies need to slow down and relax enough that a physical object can no longer be kept awake by its own inertia—a rule many animals follow perfectly well but humans don't always obey ourselves, particularly if we're tired or stressed.

We tend to stay up, try hard not to drift too far from sleep even when nothing is happening around us. This keeps pushing against the door that shuts itself in our absence and can be a problem for anyone trying to fall asleep at all.

The third explanation—that people don't actually remember what they just woke up remembering—isn't necessarily true either. While it's possible, there are enough examples showing this happens regularly, including more than half of those tested who couldn't answer questions asked shortly after waking up, indicating memory can bounce back and forth between fresh impression and recollection.

But the truth is somewhere in between—because you know a person doesn't fully remember why they were awake right now while they still look like themselves. All three answers fit together seamlessly enough that most people don't really need to explain what those numbers mean anyway, but I will keep hearing them because there's always more to come.
